When Should a Student Start Preparing for the PreACT 9?

The best start date depends less on ambition than on the distance between the student’s current skills and the demands of the test. Starting early helps only when the preparation is focused and sustainable.

Start earlier when foundations are weak

Students who struggle with fractions, proportional reasoning, grammar fundamentals, reading stamina, or multi-step directions need time to learn—not merely rehearse. Several months allows instruction to proceed without overwhelming schoolwork.

A shorter timeline may work for a strong student

A student with secure content and a history of strong standardized-test performance may need six to ten weeks of format familiarity, pacing, and error correction rather than a long course.

Seventh grade: build, do not panic

Seventh graders can strengthen reading, math, grammar, and study habits without turning the year into constant admissions testing. Because final seventh-grade marks remain part of the CPS points framework, test preparation should never damage school performance.

Summer before eighth grade

Summer is often useful for a baseline and foundation work because the student has fewer competing assignments. A modest, consistent plan is usually better than a last-minute intensive.

Early eighth grade

Shift toward section timing, mixed practice, and realistic simulations while monitoring the official GoCPS calendar. Non-CPS families should pay particular attention to registration deadlines for designated October testing.
