PreACT 9 Science: Data, Experiments, and Evidence
What PreACT 9 science actually measures and how students can prepare for graphs, tables, experiments, and competing explanations.
PreACT 9 science is best understood as a scientific reasoning section. Students analyze information presented in graphs, tables, experimental descriptions, and competing explanations. The section is less about recalling a textbook and more about using evidence correctly.
Three central skill groups
Interpretation of data
Students identify trends, compare values, interpolate, extrapolate, and connect information across figures. Axis labels, units, legends, and conditions matter.
Scientific investigation
Students recognize independent and dependent variables, controls, procedures, repeated trials, and how an experimental change might affect results.
Evaluation of models and conclusions
Students decide which claim is supported, compare viewpoints, identify assumptions, and predict how new evidence would affect an explanation.
Read the question before reading everything
Many questions can be answered directly from one table or figure. Reading every word of a long experiment first may waste time. Begin by identifying the source the question requires, then gather only the necessary context.
Use units and direction
A student can understand the graph generally and still choose the wrong answer by ignoring units, scale, or whether a variable increases or decreases. Make a habit of stating the relationship in words before selecting an option.
When outside knowledge matters
Most questions are answerable from the provided information, but basic scientific literacy can make interpretation faster. Preparation should emphasize data reasoning and experimental logic rather than trying to memorize an entire science curriculum.
The three passage formats
The science section is not one uniform thing; ACT builds it from three formats, and recognizing which one a student is looking at changes how to attack it. Data Representation passages (a large share of the section) present graphs and tables and ask students to read trends, interpolate, and translate between formats. Research Summaries describe one or more experiments and focus on design and results — variables, controls, and what a change would do. Conflicting Viewpoints passages present two or more competing explanations and ask students to compare them. That last format is the one that rewards actual reading rather than chart-reading, and it is where students who "just look at the graphs" tend to lose points.
What the section really measures
ACT reports science as three skills: interpretation of data, scientific investigation, and evaluation of models and results. None of these is a test of memorized biology or chemistry. Background knowledge occasionally speeds things up, but the central work is reasoning from the information on the screen. This is good news for students who fear science class — the section rewards careful reading of evidence more than it rewards recall.
Read the question first — usually
On Data Representation and Research Summaries passages, many questions point to a single figure or a single line of text. Reading an entire experimental description before glancing at the questions often wastes time. The efficient habit is to skim the passage's structure, then let each question send the student to the specific table, axis, or sentence it depends on. Conflicting Viewpoints passages are the exception: those genuinely require reading each position before the questions make sense.
The units-and-direction check
A student can understand a graph in general terms and still miss the question by ignoring units, scale, or whether a quantity is rising or falling. A reliable safeguard is to state the relationship in words — "as temperature goes up, solubility goes down" — before touching the answer choices. Naming the direction out loud catches the errors that "I understood the graph" quietly hides.
