PreACT 9 Math: What to Study and How to Improve
A practical guide to PreACT 9 math foundations, algebra, geometry, data, modeling, pacing, and calculator decisions.
PreACT 9 math rewards strong foundations, flexible reasoning, and disciplined pacing. Students do not need to know every high-school topic, but they do need reliable command of the mathematics expected before ninth grade and the ability to translate unfamiliar wording into a workable setup.
Core areas to review
- integers, fractions, decimals, ratios, rates, and percentages;
- expressions, equations, inequalities, and proportional relationships;
- linear relationships, slope, tables, graphs, and coordinate geometry;
- exponents, roots, scientific notation, and basic polynomial reasoning;
- angles, triangles, circles, area, volume, and transformations;
- statistics, probability, data displays, and measures of center;
- multi-step word problems and mathematical modeling.
Foundations before shortcuts
A shortcut is only useful when the student understands why it works. Students who memorize isolated tricks often collapse when a familiar idea appears in a different form. Begin with accurate methods, then compare faster alternatives.
Use the calculator strategically
A calculator can confirm arithmetic or evaluate an expression, but it cannot decide how to represent the problem. Students should practice recognizing when mental math, written work, estimation, or calculator entry is fastest and least error-prone.
Pacing by decision, not by panic
With forty-five minutes for roughly thirty-four questions, students have enough average time to reason—but not enough to spend five minutes rescuing one difficult item. A strong plan uses a first pass for accessible questions, marks expensive questions, and returns with remaining time.
How to review a missed math problem
Ask four separate questions:
- Did the student understand what was being asked?
- Did the student know the underlying concept?
- Was the setup efficient and accurate?
- Did arithmetic, calculator entry, or time pressure cause the miss?
Those causes require different fixes. More random practice will not correct a misunderstanding of slope, and reteaching slope will not fix a student who consistently enters negative signs incorrectly.
How the math score is built
ACT groups math questions into reporting categories, and the weights are worth knowing. About 77% of the section falls under "Preparing for Higher Math," split across number and quantity (roughly 10–13%), algebra (17–23%), functions (17–23%), geometry (10–13%), and statistics and probability (10–13%). Another 23% measures "Integrating Essential Skills" — rates, percentages, proportional reasoning, and multi-step problems that combine earlier skills. Separately, at least 20% of questions are "Modeling" questions that also count in the categories above; these ask students to build, interpret, or improve a mathematical representation of a real situation. Algebra and functions together are the largest slice, so a student weak in either is leaving the most points on the table.
The calculator rule that surprises families
A calculator is permitted on the math section but not required, and ACT is explicit that every problem can be solved without one. Just as important: a calculator is not allowed on the science section. Families who assume "calculator allowed throughout" set students up for a bad surprise. The practical skill is judgment — knowing when mental math or a quick sketch is faster than keying an expression, and reserving the calculator for genuine arithmetic that would otherwise invite a slip.
Translating words into a setup
The questions students miss are rarely the ones with a clean equation already written. They are word problems where the difficulty is deciding what to write down. Preparation should include deliberate practice at the translation step alone: read a problem, write the correct equation or diagram, and stop — without solving. Separating "set it up" from "grind it out" exposes whether a miss came from misunderstanding the question or from an arithmetic error, and those need very different fixes.
Where the easy points hide
On a section like this, a student who reliably banks every accessible question and simply guesses on the two or three hardest items often scores higher than a student who chases the hard problems and rushes the rest into careless errors. Before a student spends a month on advanced topics, it is worth checking how many points are being lost on problems they already know how to do. Preventable mistakes are usually the fastest available growth.
