How Non-CPS and Private-School Students Take the CPS HSAT

Students do not need to attend a CPS elementary school to apply through GoCPS, but non-CPS students follow a different testing process. This includes students in Catholic or independent schools, students in suburban schools who plan to move to Chicago, and homeschooled students.

Create and complete the GoCPS application

CPS says non-CPS students must create a GoCPS account and actively apply to a program requiring the HSAT. For the 2027–28 cycle, the application and HSAT registration open September 9, 2026 and the application closes November 13, 2026.

Choose a designated testing session

For the 2027–28 application cycle, CPS lists non-CPS testing on October 17–18 and October 24–25, 2026. Current CPS and charter students test during the school day on October 7. Non-CPS families register through GoCPS for a designated testing session.

Respect the registration deadline

CPS cannot offer testing outside the official window. The district states that registration closes ten business days before the designated test date. Families should complete the application and testing registration early enough to resolve account or documentation problems.

The test may be taken only once

A student cannot take one session as a trial and another for a better score. Practice should happen before the official administration.

Residency and enrollment

CPS resources explain that a student may participate in the application process before living in Chicago, but must establish Chicago residency to enroll and attend. Families planning a move should review current proof-of-residency requirements and deadlines.
